Troop works on badge by helping at local library

From the Mercer Area Library October/November Newsletter:

The children’s department is a very busy place nowadays! Not only do we have many new books, and new bean- bag chairs, but we also have 3 very important new residents. Ferdinand, our library hamster, has now been joined by two cute female library rats, Templeton and Mrs. Frisby. We are so very thankful to Mercer resident Michaela Neely for donating these very special new pets, along with the wonderful residence for Templeton and Mrs. Frisby.

Having pets in the children’s department is a win/win for our local children. Not only do they have the fun and excitement of seeing the animals in the library when they come to visit, but our new pets are a learning experience as well. Children now have the opportunity to observe the animals’ natural behavior, find out about their eating and sleeping habits, their daily care, and discover the responsibilities of having small pets.

Girl Scout leader Kathy Shaffer and Mercer Girl Scout Troop 36324 will be adopting Templeton and Mrs. Frisby. The girls will be providing the food and care for the library’s rats and learning about small pet care as a part of their pet badge, one of the badges that the girls will be working on this year. Mrs. Frisby and Templeton are two very lucky rats!
