Girl Scouts Set Sail!

Ahoy from Lake Erie!
by Maureen Conner
On June 26, members from Senior and Cadette Girl Scout Troops 30609
and 30834 from Mercer took part in a fantastic learning experience
aboard the Milwaukee Schooner Denis Sullivan, a 137 foot sailing vessel
that is also a floating classroom. During the three hour cruise through the Lake
Erie channel and onto the lake, the Scouts were able to assist with hoisting
the sails and stowing the ropes.  Stations run by the crew members included:
nautical navigation, knot tying, water quality testing and marine biology....
did you know that the Portuguese Man o'War is actually a member of the
plankton family?  Everyone had a wonderful time on this cruise solely attended
by members of the Girl Scouts of Western PA.  Thank you to everyone who
made this day a memorable experience!
